We directly admit freshmen to Gies Business, and students have the opportunity to explore all of our majors through core curriculum classes before declaring a specific major by the end of their sophomore year.
Freshman applications are submitted through the Illinois University Admissions office. On the application, students are asked to list their first choice major. All students interested in applying to Gies Business, regardless of whether they are interested in general business or a specific major, would choose “Business-assigned” as their first choice major.
Applications for admission to Gies Business are reviewed holistically, with no minimum cutoff for GPA or standardized test score. There is no formula for admission– we assess each application and take into consideration the following criteria:
High school curriculum rigor and courses taken
Your grades in those courses
ACT/SAT scores (only the highest composite and highest subscores are considered)
Your major interest essay
Demonstrated involvement and engagement within your school, workplace, and/or communities
Achievements and honors
Additional information provided in the optional essay to explain lower grades, missing requirements, or unique personal situations
