History

In March, 2006, the College of Business announced the creation of the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society. The mission of the inter-disciplinary Center is to develop a national vision that articulates societal expectations of a professional’s responsibility and accountability at both the individual and organizational level.

Because society depends on business professionals to exercise sound judgment and to perform with a high degree of competence while attending to daily matters, the Center focuses on these complex and multi-dimensional professional attributes and how they must be nurtured in order to be attained. It also provides intellectual leadership and resources that advance the understanding of ways professionals can serve the public interest in the context of an ever-changing business environment. Those involved with the Center explore the concept of professional responsibility in its broadest terms and are committed to infuse their findings throughout the curriculum and to share those learnings outside the University.

The Center benefits from access to the extensive intellectual resources of a large and respected university as well as the financial support of two founding organizations – an eight year, $4 million pledge from the not-for-profit Deloitte Foundation, sponsored by Deloitte LLP, and a $4 million settlement from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Gretchen Winter, who was appointed Executive Director of the Center in November, 2007, guides multiple initiatives regarding curriculum development, research, and outreach activities with business leaders, regulators, non-governmental organizations, and the media.
