The Lincoln Academy of Illinois’ Order of Lincoln award honors the top senior from each four-year university in Illinois. This year the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign selected College of Business senior and business administration major Benjamin Martin Miller ’13 to receive the State’s highest student honor for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.
Miller’s Lincoln Academy of Illinois membership is reserved for an elite few, like Mary Ann G. McMorrow, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Illinois, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States, and College of Business students Mark Paik ’10 and Billy Tabrizi ’12. Miller is the third business student in four years to receive this prestigious award!
Miller has distinguished himself academically and socially as a leader among talented ILLINOIS students. Miller is a member of the College of Business Honors Program and the College of Business James Scholars. When Miller joined Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) as a freshman, it was a group of 10 members with no projects and little organizational structure; as President, he created a strong organizational structure and led more than 45 members with 8 major projects, including “Go Green on Green Street,” which brought together over 1000 individuals to educate the local community, and international efforts such as helping teach entrepreneurial skills to local farmers and business owners in Uganda and Nigeria.
Besides his work with SIFE, Miller also works with other student leaders in the College of Business on an ongoing task force charged with improving communications between students and the administration. If that weren’t enough, he also serves as an advisor for his own Supply Chain Management Program, holding 10 office hours per week.
Jewell White, assistant dean of admissions, who co-authored Miller’s nomination with John Hedeman, former assistant dean of honors, praised him saying, “We are extremely proud of Ben. He represents the true spirit of leadership that we strive for in the College of Business.”
Miller and White will attend the Student Laureate Award Ceremony in Springfield, IL on November 3, 2012.
