What’s New at the College of Business?
Staff Appreciation Lunch
Thank you for attending the Staff Appreciation Lunch! 140 employees joined for the festivities.
Please join us in welcoming new employees and congratulating existing employees on new roles within the College over the last couple of months.
Alexa Ashenhurst, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement
Alexa previously worked for Western Illinois University as the Director of Special Events for the University Foundation, where she was responsible for the creation and implementation of major donor stewardship events, scholarship events, campus-wide faculty and staff events and regional alumni events. She will now be working as the college liaison for our Business Young Alumni Committee and working to identify new opportunities for alumni to engage across the campus. In her free time, Alexa enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her friends, family, and dog.
Stephanie Bartelt, Associate Director, Recruitment and Admissions, Business Graduate Programs
Stephanie recently joined Gies from the George Washington University College of Business. In her 15 plus years as a Graduate Business admissions marketing and recruitment professional, Stephanie has assisted with the development and implementation of marketing and recruitment strategies to select and enroll an exceptional class of MBA and Specialized Masters students comprised of diverse business professionals from around the world. Stephanie reports into Jenny Larson.
Charisse Coleman, Assistant Director, HR- Business Administration
Charisse has worked on campus for the last ten years within the College of LAS. She comes to us from The Department of Communication, where she served as Human Resource Associate since 2013. In her new role at Gies College of Business, Charisse will oversee all searches within her department, manage onboarding of new employees, and provide guidance and oversight for all HR related processes and policies.
Anabel Galan, Coordinator, Career Services
Prior to joining BCS, Anabel served as the Program Coordinator for the Minority Engineering Program at The Ohio State University focusing on outreach, recruitment, and student organization programs. Some of the projects she will be working on in this new role are the Peer Career Coaching Center, facilitating content for the Business 101 course, and building relationships with student organizations. She reports to Tracy Parish.
Mindy Garth, Business/Administrative Associate, Office of Marketing & Communications
Mindy has been with the University of Illinois for 3.5 years as a business/administrative associate. Previously, she worked at Parkland College and in the private industry as an executive assistant. She handles all business functions for the Office of Marketing & Communications. Mindy reports to Jan Slater.
Lily Huang, Assistant Director, Business Career Services
Lily is an alumna of the University of Illinois, and in 2014, she returned to campus as a working professional. For the past 4.5 years, she worked at the office of International Student and Scholar Services, where she advised international students on maintaining their legal status in the US. She earned her BA in East Asian studies from the University of Illinois and her MEd in international higher education from Loyola University in Chicago. Lily provides advising for Business Graduate Programs students on their career development and job search strategies both domestically and internationally. She is serving as liaison to the Master of Science in Accountancy Program. Outside of her day job, Lily spends a great deal of time volunteering and giving back to various communities. Lily reports to Elizabeth Chominski.
Dustin Janes, Office Manager, Finance
Dustin started working for the University of Illinois in Fall 2012. He began as a receptionist in the Department of Economics in LAS before being promoted to Office Support Specialist. In December 2016, he moved to an office manager position in the Department of Urban + Regional Planning in FAA where he was responsible for coordinating travel arrangements, itinerary development, promotion & tenure procedures, course scheduling, inventory management, and purchasing. In his new position in the Department of Finance, Dustin will primarily work in course scheduling and registration. Outside of the office, Dustin is an LGBT advocate and enjoys gaming, fitness, and writing.
Katie McKinney, Office Support Specialist, MSTM
Katie will be working with admissions and event planning for the Master of Science in Technology Management program. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, she worked as a secretary for two years. In her free time, Katie enjoys traveling, watching sports, and spending time with her husband and three children. She will be reporting to Lorena Nicholas.
Kevin Merrifield, Web Systems Developer, IT Services
Kevin is part of the team that will be building the new Gies College of Business web experience. He has been involved in professional web development and Internet-related work since 1996. Primarily a Microsoft technology specialist focusing on web, database, SEO, HCI, and user-experience areas, he is proficient in many facets of web-related work. He now focuses on .NET and Sitefinity website development. Kevin’s hobbies include playing guitar, walking, rowing, movies, archery (with his daughter), Minecraft (with his son), and music in general. He reports to Chris Tidrick.
Tamara Piper, Office Support Specialist, Undergraduate Affairs
Tamara has over 20 years of experience in advertising and marketing, previously working for top Chicago agencies like Burrell, DDB, and FCB. She has experience in direct, field, and multicultural marketing, strategic planning, media sales, and managing cross-functional teams to produce consumer brand awareness campaigns and engagements. In her new role, Tamara will provide project management and administrative support to the undergraduate affairs office. She reports to Alex See.
Hanna Richmond, Director of Administration, Finance
Hanna is the administrative contact for Finance related matters. She has over ten years of experience across a broad range of legal and administrative functions in higher education and healthcare. She worked in OBFS and the Information Trust Institute in the College of Engineering prior to coming to the Gies College of Business. Her hobbies include traveling, running and reading. Hanna is a recent PMBA graduate so be sure to congratulate her!
Paige Roytek, Coordinator of Stewardship and Alumni Engagement, Office of Advancement
Paige is a former University of Illinois student-athlete with women’s softball. She attended a year of law school at Southern Illinois University before returning to Champaign to pursue a role in advancement for Gies College of Business. In her current role, she collaborates with the entire College advancement team, major gift officers, College and department administrators, the University of Illinois Foundation, donors, and others in facilitating and establishment of fund agreements, statement of gifts, establishment of fund accounts, monitoring spending of funds, tracking beneficiaries of funds, and reporting to donors on the impact of their giving. Paige reports to Molly Tracy.
Sheila Wenger, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, Office of Advancement
Sheila joined us from the College of LAS, where she was the Coordinator of Student and Young Alumni Initiatives. Sheila also has previous events and programming experience gained through working at the University of Illinois Alumni Association, Champaign Park District, and Wolfram Research. In her new role, she will work collaboratively with all Gies College of Business constituents to coordinate alumni interactions. Sheila is an avid reader and coffee drinker, and she enjoys hiking, biking, and spending time with her two teenagers. She will report to Molly Tracy.
Jeff Yacup, Associate Director of Recruitment and Admissions, Graduate Programs Office
Prior to joining Gies College of Business, Jeff served as an Assistant Director at the Illinois Leadership Center at the University of Illinois for four and a half years. In his role, he led over 300 leadership trainings covering topics like communication skills, teamwork, and strategic planning. Jeff has also served as the Student Life Coordinator at Virginia Tech’s Steger Center for International Scholarship in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, and Residential Learning Coordinator for Fraternity & Sorority Housing also at Virginia Tech. He received both a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Virginia Tech. In his new role, Jeff will assist in the development, management, and execution of recruiting strategy for graduate students and will recruit and counsel prospective students. In his spare time, Jeff enjoys being outdoors, traveling, and sports. He reports to Jenny Larson.
Taylor Young, Office Support Specialist, Business Graduate Programs
Taylor has previously worked at various departments in the University of Illinois, including Facilities & Services, Office of the Dean of Students, Testing Center, and Industrial and Enterprise System Engineering. In her new role, she will assist with admissions and event planning for the MSA program in the Business Graduate Programs office. She reports to Lorena Nicholas.
