Minor in Business for Non-Business Majors

The Minor in Business offers students the theoretical and applied knowledge of management, accounting, finance, marketing and organizational behavior – valuable tools for young professionals.

Please become knowledgeable of the minor requirements-

  • All minor Core and Elective courses must be taken on the Urbana-Champaign campus. 
  • There are no exceptions for Transfer and Study Abroad courses to fulfill the minor course requirements.
  • Credit/No Credit courses will not be applied to the minor.

Required Business Minor courses:

ACCY 200:  Fundamentals of Accounting
This course is designed for Non-Business majors.  The objective of this course is to provide the understanding, interpretation and use of current accounting principles.

BADM 310:  Management and Organizational Behavior
This course offers a general analysis of management and organizational behavior from a systems point of view.  It includes classical organizational theory and management, organizational behavior and management science, environmental forces, planning, organizing and control processes, motivation, incentives, leadership, communication and interpersonal relations.  This course will offer discussion of production and decision-making and mathematical models.

Please Note: The College of Business highly recommends the Department of Business Administration’s BADM 310 online course to fulfill the BADM 310 course requirement.

BADM 320:  Principles of Marketing
This course emphasizes the concepts of planning, organization, control and decision making as they are applied in the management of the marketing function.  This course provides an overview of aspects of the marketing discipline.

FIN 221:  Corporate Finance:
Introductory study of corporate financial management, in particular how the financial manager's choices add value to shareholder wealth through investment financing and operating decisions.

Minor Elective Courses

You must select at least two of the following Elective courses to complete the minor requirements:

Enrollment in ACCY 200 and BADM 310 in the Fall Semesters.  Enrollment in BADM 320 and FIN 221 in the Spring Semesters.  You may also take these courses during the UIUC Summer Sessions.  Summer enrollment will be based upon classroom space availability.  Elective courses may be taken at any time after you have fulfilled any Elective course prerequisites.

Application Requirements:

1) Have at least 60 hours completed by the end of the spring semester of application.

2) Have completed or be concurrently enrolled in, during the spring semester of application, the following four prerequisite courses or approved substitutes. Note: These courses or their substitute must have been completed for a grade, exceptions given for AP credit.

3) You must be in academic good standing (2.0 GPA or higher).

4) A cumulative 2.0 GPA is required in the four prerequisite courses.

5) The College of Business will accept admission applications January 1st until January 31st and May 1st until May 31st.

The University's Statement of Intent to Pursue a Campus-Approved Minor is the official application form. Please complete only step one of the application form and then submit it to the College of Business in either January or May. Applications must be submitted into the College of Business’s Office of Undergraduate Affairs in 1055 Business Instructional Facility (BIF). All applicants will be notified of an admission decision by mid-February or mid-June. Students who are officially admitted to the Business Minor will be given enrollment instructions. An admission to the minor is competitive, based on the cumulative and prerequisite GPA of the pool of applicants. Planning to pursue a Business minor does not offer special registration privileges.

Clarification:

The Business Minor will be awarded only to students who have been admitted into the Business Minor program. 

  • The Business Minor is not available to students in the Technology and Management Minor and the LAS Finance major.
  • The Business Minor is not to be considered as preparation for transfer into the College of Business.
  • Students from across campus should be able to enroll in the prerequisite courses, but will experience registration restrictions - "college major restriction" - when attempting to enroll in the required Business Minor Core and Elective courses.
  • Prerequisite courses may be completed off campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any of the prerequisite or required Business Minor courses be taken credit-no credit?
No.

Can any of the required courses for the Business Minor be taken off campus at another college or university?
Only the prerequisite courses may be completed off campus. Stated differently, ACCY 200, FIN 221, BADM 310, BADM 320 and the Elective courses must be taken on the UIUC campus.

Is there a minimum GPA that must be earned in the prerequisite courses to apply for the Business Minor?
Yes. Your Cumulative GPA in the four prerequisite courses must be a 2.0 or higher to apply for the Business Minor.

Are there any students that cannot receive a BUS minor?
Yes. Technology and Management Minors and LAS Finance majors are unable to receive a Business minor.

How do I register for the courses required for the Business Minor after acceptance?
Students who are officially admitted to the Business Minor will be notified by the College of Business with enrollment instructions.

What is the time line for minor approval?
Applications will only be accepted in January and May. Applications will be reviewed by the college in February and June. All applicants will be notified of a decision by mid-February or mid-June.
