Scholarships with January application deadlines

2010 Illinois Venture Capital Association Scholar Program

 

Overview
The IVCA Scholar Program is intended to support students who are interested in a career in the venture capital/private equity industry.  This scholarship is valued at $15,000 including:

  • $5,000 tuition award (which will be paid into the student’s account at the university bursar’s office by IVCA) and
  • 10-week, internship at a venture capital or private equity firm located in the Chicagoland area($10,000 for the summer).  Internships will be 10 weeks in duration.  Firms will schedule specific weeks and work hours with the student.

Up to 3 students will be selected for summer 2010 internships.  IVCA expects to notify selected students by March 1st, 2010. Students will be expected to participate in coaching at the Golder Center to better prepare them for the skills required at as a Venture Capital/Private Equity firm intern and will also participate in Toastmasters International during the 10-week internship. Intern responsibilities will vary by student experience and firm requirements.

Selection criteria:

  • University of Illinois, College of Business Student or participant in the Golder Center. Strong preference for minimum 3.4 GPA.
  • Has completed at least 3 years of undergraduate coursework.
  • Is a US Citizen

Application Elements:

  • Current resume.
  • Three Essays:
    • Description of skills, experience and coursework relevant for working at a VC/PE firm. (750 words or fewer)
    • Essay describing High School attended and key college accomplishments. (750 words or fewer)
    • Essay explaining student’s interest in a career in venture capital/private equity. (750 words or fewer)

Selection Process:

  • Submit the resume and the three essays in a single Word document as an email attachment no later than January 15th  via email to John Hedeman, Assistant Dean, hedeman@illinois.edu
  • Dean Hedeman and the College of Business scholarship committee will submit to IVCA a list of up to 10 students for consideration.         
  • IVCA Scholar committee will review and select students for interview
  • IVCA Scholar committee & hiring firms will conduct interviews
  • IVCA and hiring firms will make final selections

Steven N. Miller Entrepreneurial Scholarships

Outstanding undergraduates in the College of Business with demonstrated interests in entrepreneurship are eligible to apply for Steven N. Miller Entrepreneurial Scholarships.  Scholarships totaling $10,000 are available.

Last year five undergraduate were awarded scholarship ranging from $1000 to $4000 each as Miller Scholars.

To be eligible to apply, current College of Business undergraduate students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be registered as a full-time student and paying tuition.  Students who are receiving a tuition waiver (veteran, fellowship, assistantship, etc.)  or assistance from other sources (corporate or College of Business scholarships) are not eligible; 
  • Have earned a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or higher.
  • Demonstrate significant interest in entrepreneurship activities through participation in entrepreneurial programs, participation in entrepreneurial projects, participation in start-up ventures or other entrepreneurial activities.

College of Business undergraduate students who meet the criteria may apply for the Steven N. Miller Entrepreneurial Scholarship by submitting the following:

  • A current resume.
  • One letter of recommendation from a College of Business faculty or staff member or from a fellow undergraduate student.
  • One page statement demonstrating achievement and significant interest related to entrepreneurship.

Applicants must submit the resume and statement electronically in a single Word document to John Hedeman, Assistant Dean for Honors at hedeman@illinois.edu by Noon, Tuesday, January 26.  Recommendations may be submitted in any format to Dean Hedeman by Noon, January 26.

A meeting for Mr. Miller and the scholarship recipients will be arranged during the spring semester.

 

Harold V. and Caroline H. Miller Scholarship

Members of Alpha Kappa Psi are eligible to compete for the Harold V. and Caroline H. Miller Scholarship.  We are able to award $2,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year.  Applications for the Harold V. and Caroline H. Miller Scholarship are restricted to members of Alpha Kappa Psi.  A Miller Scholar must be a College of Business student who, to the extent possible to ascertain, should have a “sincere appreciation for the role free markets have played in establishing a standard of living in the United States which is unequaled anywhere else in the world.” 

Last year four AKPsi members were awarded $500 each as Miller Scholars.

Applicants must submit a professional resume and a one-page statement demonstrating that “sincere appreciation” for “free markets.”  The scholarship committee will review the applicants and their academic records. 

The applications must be submitted electronically in a single Word document to hedeman@illinois.eduby Noon, Tuesday, January 26.

 

Professor Philip and Cheryl Rushing Alpha Kappa Psi Scholarship

Members of Alpha Kappa Psi are eligible to compete for the Professor Philip and Cheryl Rushing Alpha Kappa Psi Scholarship.  We are able to award a $1,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year.  Applications for the Professor Philip and Cheryl Rushing Alpha Kappa Psi Scholarship are restricted to members of Alpha Kappa Psi. The Rushing Scholarship will be awarded to that student who has made the greatest contribution to Alpha Kappa Psi and the College of Business in service to fellow students. 

Last year two AKPsi members were awarded $500 each as Rushing Scholars.

Applicants should submit a resume and a one page summary describing the contribution that they have made to AKPsi and the College of Business.  The resume and summary must be submitted electronically in a single Word document to John Hedeman, Assistant Dean for Honors at hedeman@illinois.edu by Noon, Tuesday, January 26.

 

The Sidney M. Stafford Scholarships

The Stafford Family Endowment was established by Sidney M. Stafford of Champaign, IL to honor his son, the late Timothy Collins Stafford.  College of Business students who are pursuing a degree in accountancy are eligible to apply.  First preference shall be given to students with demonstrated financial need who have transferred from a community college, junior college or similar two year college to the University of Illinois College of Business.

Last year three undergraduate were awarded scholarships of $350 each as Stafford Scholars.

To apply for the Stafford Scholarships, undergraduate accountancy majors must submit a current resume and a statement of financial need electronically in a single Word document tohedeman@illinois.edu by Noon, Tuesday, January 26.
