National Leadership of Business Advisors
Teresa D’Urso, the Director of Advising and Registration at the University of Illinois - College of Business, was elected in 2009 to serve a 2 year term as the Commission Chair for NACADA’s Advising Business Majors Commission.
The NATIONAL ACADEMIC ADVISING ASSOCIATION (NACADA) with over 10,000 members - promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students. NACADA provides a forum for discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas pertaining to academic advising through numerous activities and publications.
Teresa’s goal as the Advising Business Majors Commission Chair was to improve the network of collegial relationships for both faculty and professional advisors. To provide an arena for business advisors to discuss topics of interest – unite for creative solutions to similar problems. Teresa was able to motivate and encourage members to submit proposals for presentation at the annual advising conference. Under Teresa’s tenure the number of proposals submitted by business advisors tripled this year – improving the quality and increasing resources for business advisors.
Teresa has also orchestrated an important new program encouraging professional development among business advisors. Teresa created a professional development recognition program sponsored by the Commission to recognize members for extra effort/education put forward each year toward advising excellence for students. Advisors are able to complete the recognition program at their own institutions! In the first year alone – 31 business advising professionals from across the United States will receive this award at the October 2010 annual conference in Orlando, FL.
