Having an IMPACT
by Sarah Small
On April 23, students, business professionals and College faculty will replace their suits and ties with work clothes and spend the day volunteering at different sites throughout the community for Business Council’s third annual IMPACT Day.
IMPACT Day, which stands for Initiate Merging of Philanthropy and Community Together, is one of Business Council’s largest philanthropy events that bring together students, business professionals and College faculty for volunteer activities in the community, said Mike Smigielski Business Council philanthropy chair.
“It’s an effort of the entire Business Council, people from different companies and faculty to give back to the community at large,” Smigielski said.
"The biggest thing the organizers of IMPACT Day worry about is rain ruining outdoor volunteer activities, said Maureen Breseman, vice president for operations of Business Council. To be sure rain would not put a damper on the day's service projects, a variety of indoor and outdoor sites have been designated."
“You’re working side-by-side and networking in a different way,” Breseman said. “Together you’re giving back.”
Zach Frey, Business Council philanthropy chair, said the response from the Colleges corporate sponsors has been overwhelming. He said the received quick responses from companies who wanted to support the event and send their employees to participate.
“They jumped on it right away,” Frey said. “There were a lot more (people interested) than we expected.”
Participating faculty will include Victor Mullins, associate dean for Undergraduate Affairs, John Hedeman, assistant dean, Honors, Paul Magelli, senior director of Illinois Business Consulting, and others.
“They definitely embrace it and are excited to see us doing this for the community,” Frey said.
Following the day of volunteering, all participants will meet on campus for a networking luncheon.
