Practical Leadership Guide Offers Solutions

Pete Mockaitis.A College of Business senior is offering his solutions to the challenges facing leaders of student organizations in a new book published by Optimality Press.

“The Student Leader’s Field Guide,” written by Pete Mockaitis, offers ideas and techniques, says the author, that will help individuals working with student organizations increase their personal effectiveness and improve an organization’s results.

Student volunteer organizations are characterized by a lack of money and unpaid staff who have multiple demands on their time. With this tough reality, volunteer leaders frequently fail to produce results. The chapters in the Field Guide are, by design, filled with easily understood, practical problem-solving techniques that leaders can apply immediately to their organizational and personnel challenges.

“Everything in the book deals with one question: ‘How can knowing this increase the organization’s effectiveness?’,” says Mockaitis. “Most books don’t offer practical techniques so I’ve focused on bite-sized nuggets of information that are truly helpful to student leaders.”

Mockaitis will be signing copies of his book at the Illinois Leadership Center on the second floor of the Illini Union Wednesday, December 7th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Mockaitis is majoring in finance and organizational administration in the College of Business and has completed the requirements for a minor in technology and management. While at Illinois, he has served as the human resources partner for the Office for Technical Resources Consulting, a student-run consulting firm that works with local companies as well as campus units. His entrepreneurial spirit lead him to incorporate Optimality Press and publish his first book. He will join Bain & Company, a global business consulting firm, as a Chicago-based consultant following his May 2006 graduation.
