Dad's Day 2008

Dads Day

By: Lucas Schumann

This year’s Halloween weekend brought a change of pace to the U of I campus. Other than crazy costume parties and late nights of fun with your closest friends, Dad was in town for the festivities. Fathers from all over the country descended on campus in full force for Dads Weekend 2008, armed with tailgating gear and stories of the good old days, “When I was in college.….”

Fathers joined in on the activities of their Illini children, and proved that they still have some of that energy from the good old days.  Illini fathers and students alike cheered the Fighting Illini on to a victory against the rival Hawkeyes of Iowa, and many select dads did not fail to entertain during their rendition of the halftime show.

In addition to the typical Dads Day events, I took the opportunity to show my dad around the new jewel of the College of Business (COB), the Business Instructional Facility. While there, I noticed many fellow COB Illini who had the same idea, and the dads certainly seemed impressed with the new addition to campus.

Many dads seemed particularly entertained by the touch-screen monitors that allowed them to pan an areal view of campus, and learn more about what makes the new facility so special. Taking the chance to give their dad a tour of the new center of the College was an opportunity that many students seemed to take, and that will undoubtedly help spread the word about the state of the art facilities that are available to undergraduate business students at U of I.

All in all, the weekend was a great success. Not only was U of I victorious on the Memorial Stadium football field, students were able to showcase the new pride of the College of Business to their dads.

With that, countless dads became new U of I ambassadors, returning home to spread the word about the great things going on at the University, and the steps that the College of Business is taking to become the premier undergraduate business institution in the world.
