Westgren Named Department Head of Business Administration

Champaign, Ill. – The College of Business at the University of Illinois is pleased to announce that Professor Randall Westgren has been appointed to head the Department of Business Administration effective August 15, 2007. Westgren assumes the position from long-serving head Huseyin Leblebici who will continue to enjoy research and teaching pursuits in the College.

Westgren joined the University of Illinois in 1995 as a professor of agribusiness management in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics and has recently served as a professor of business administration and director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) in the College of Business.

Prior to joining Illinois, Westgren was department chair in agricultural economics at McGill University and assistant professor of agribusiness at the Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University. He holds a bachelor of science from Cornell University, an MBA from Denver University, and a PhD in agricultural economics from Purdue University. His research applies behavioral models from organizational economics, management theory, strategy, complexity theory, and sociology to the study of firms, supply chains, and producer organizations.

“Randy is an accomplished researcher and teacher whose direction of CIBER is testimony to his ability to lead a complex organization and draw impressive results from the collaboration of faculty and staff,” states Avijit Ghosh, dean of the College of Business.  “As department head of business administration, Randy’s innovativeness, energy, and the esteem to which he is held by his peers are certain to propel the department and College to even greater prominence.  Randy will carry the mantle of leadership with integrity, just as Huseyin Leblebici has done with excellence over the past seven years.”

Of his affiliation with the College of Business, Westgren states, “Many of my most gratifying sources of professional fulfillment over the past twelve years have been the collaborations I have had with faculty in Business Administration – research projects, graduate student committees, classroom experiences, and CIBER activities. The privilege of serving as department head will offer the opportunity to extend these collegial relationships. I look forward to the chance to participate in the development of one of the preeminent departments in North America.”

Westgren assumes the post as the department reformats its degree offerings and, beginning fall 2007, requires students to declare a major from among five disciplines: Business Process Management, Information Systems and Information Technology, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, or Management.  Students will have the option to earn a double major, and those pursuing a Management degree will be required to concentrate in international business or entrepreneurship.

Nationally recognized as one of the leading business schools, the College of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has outstanding programs in accountancy, business administration, and finance. The College enrolls approximately 3,000 undergraduates and 775 graduate students in MBA, master’s, and doctoral programs.
