Louis K. C. Chan, Chair of the Department of Finance


Louis K. C. Chan has been elected as the new chair of the Department of Finance, effective August 16, 2012.

Chan is the Hoeft Professor of Business, a position he has held since 2004. He first came to Illinois in 1988 as an assistant professor of finance. Before that he was an assistant professor of finance at Cornell University.

Louis’s research focuses on the behavior of prices in stock markets. His area of expertise is the application of statistical methods to the study of financial markets. His articles in leading finance journals have attracted widespread attention in the investment management industry and received numerous awards, including the American Association of Individual Investors Award and the Dodd-Graham Scroll of Excellence. In addition, he has participated actively in applying investment research through executive education and consultation with leading investment managers in Europe and the U.S.

Chan earned a doctorate in finance and applied economics and a masters in applied economics from the University of Rochester. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Hawaii.
