Louis Chan Honored as Hoeft Professor

Louis Kuo Chi Chan accepted the latest honor in his career when he was invested as the Leonard C. and Mary Lou Hoeft Professor on March 17.

"I would like to deflect these good feelings to others," said Chan in brief remarks to the dignitaries, friends, and fellow faculty gathered to celebrate his new professorship. Chan, a prolific researcher, is an expert in the application of statistical methods to the study of financial markets.

A member of the faculty since 1988, Chan holds a PhD in finance and applied economics and an MS in applied economic from the University of Rochester. His undergraduate degree in business administration is from the University of Hawaii. He was on the faculty of Cornell University before joining the University of Illinois.

The Hoeft Professorship was established by Leonard and Mary Lou Hoeft in 2004. Dean Avijit Ghosh thanked the Hoefts in his comments during the ceremony and noted that a professorship honors twice - it honors the distinguished faculty member as well as the donor. "We're grateful to the Hoefts for this gift."
