College
Welcomes Admitted Students
Room with a View Scene for Reception with Admitted Students and
Parents
It
was standing room only at the Deans' Day Reception held at the Illini
Center in downtown Chicago this month.
Students
admitted to the College of Business in the class of 2008 were welcomed
at the Illini Center (left) on January 10th. Students and parents
were invited to the reception that was held at the College's Chicago
headquarters on South Wacker Drive. The reception was an opportunity
for admitted students and their parents to meet College of Business
Dean Avijit Ghosh and Assistant
Deans John Hedeman and Jewell White from the Office
of Undergraduate Affairs and to encourage the prospective freshmen
to ask questions about Illinois. Staff hoped getting answers to
those questions would help the students decide to choose Illinois.
Associate
Provost for Enrollment Management and Director of Admissions Stan
Henderson also attended along with nine current College of Business
students and eleven alumni from the Chicago area.
Dean
Ghosh welcomed the group of more than 175 to the Illini Center and
spoke about the advantages of attending the College of Business.
Dean White congratulated the students on being admitted to the College
of Business and surveyed the opportunities that students have on
the Urbana-Champaign campus. Hedeman presented a summary of the
new Undergraduate Honors Program and scholarship opportunities for
College of Business students. White and Hedeman answered questions
from the audience. The twenty current students and recent graduates,
who each sat at one of the tables assembled in the spacious meeting
room with views of the Chicago River, provided significant information
to the students and their parents.
Students
questions focused on personal aspects of coming to a nationally
recognized College of Business on a Big Ten campus. The deans fielded
concerns about fitting in, finding friends, and handling classes,
pointing out the range of structured activities held each fall that
encourage learning about the various communities on campus and making
new friends. Freshmen convocation, ice cream socials, "open
door" periods when all dorm room doors are open to meet and
mingle are all chances to start of the semester with a new friend
or two.
Parents
looked a little longer term. Their questions were about the competitiveness
of an Illinois degree, careers services and placement success, and
the College's academic reputation.
White
called the event "a huge success" noting that many of
those in attendance have emailed Undergraduate Affairs staff with
addition quesions and comments about the reception. The
Office for Undergraduate Affairs expects to hold the reception annually.
