The MS Tax Program’s Convocation Ceremony for its 7th graduating class was held on May 6, 2012 at the University Club of Chicago. The 22 students graduating received a Master of Science in Taxation (MST) degree. Over 140 guests were in attendance for the celebration, including family members from as far away as India.
The commencement address was given by Dr. Jon S. Davis, Head of the Department of Accountancy. Dr. Davis observed that there were many lessons learned this year by the MS Tax students, not all of which were in the classroom. He observed that one of the most important lessons learned has to do with time. As busy people, time often seems to fly by, and he emphasized that time is a resource to be saved and used wisely. He spoke of two types of time: Chronos, (ordinary or clock time), and Chiros, (sacred or opportune time, time to think, etc.). In our day-to-day lives it is easy to focus on Chronos, and in so doing, we miss moments of Chiros. He counseled the students that for a good life it is crucial to carve out time for Chiros. He encouraged them to seize the time and live life for today because today will never come again.
Other speakers included Dr. Larry DeBrock, Dean of the college of Business and Rachel Elaine Bernier-Green of the Class of 2012.
