Supporting the Margolis Market Information Laboratory

The Margolis Market Information Lab (MIL) opened its doors in January of 2009, and it is now one of the most sophisticated and well-utilized university finance learning labs in the United States. It is equipped with state-of-the art electronic sources of financial and investment data and software products used globally by industry firms. These resources include Bloomberg terminals, a suite of Morningstar products, an electronic trading platform, and various risk management tools.

The mission of the MIL is to become a leader in educating the next generation of practitioners in financial research and risk management tools, and to provide a cutting-edge learning environment where students from the University of Illinois will be known as best equipped to enter the vast world of finance.

Our innovative student-teacher approach led by the Market Information Lab Fellows Program has introduced “scale” to the laboratory. Each semester, this program has enabled hundreds of Illinois students to learn these finance applications under the guidance of the individual Fellows. The Fellows program has been the key to the MIL’s success, and Fellows have gone on to work for prestigious financial institutions. They assert that the knowledge and skills they gained throughout the Fellows program has helped them stand out from the competition during recruiting, as well as on the job.

Illinois has always been a leader in incorporating learning-by-doing projects in the classroom, but the MIL has fundamentally reshaped the way we teach. To date, 27 faculty members have integrated these high-end finance applications into their courses in areas such as financial markets, investments, derivatives, portfolio management, financial risk management, corporate finance, financial engineering, and real estate.

The success of financial institutions relies upon a large base of practicing finance professionals who are not only aware of advanced financial tools, but are well-trained in their use. We believe that exposure to these tools at an early stage will help prepare Illinois students to become future leaders within the finance industry. In order for the MIL to reach its full potential and to continue executing its mission, we seek the support of organizations who share our vision and mission.
