About the Instructional Facility
Prominently located at the corner of Sixth and Gregory, the $60+ million Business Instructional Facility will serve as an exciting new landmark for the Urbana campus. Designed by Cesar Pelli, this impressive learning facility will provide 160,000+ square feet of space to accommodate state-of-the-art classrooms, career development and academic counseling centers, student program offices, a recruitment suite, a 300-seat auditorium, and space for students to meet and study.
Because business and management education today are defined by teamwork and hands-on learning, the design and layout of the new building encourages interaction. The floors have been carefully and strategically planned to serve the needs of students and visitors. Public spaces are found primarily on the first floor. Graduate and undergraduate students will be drawn to upper floors for classes and conversations.
The U-shaped structure will surround a bright, airy commons area and a spacious, south-facing courtyard. This "heart" of the building will provide space for students to study and interact with each other as well as to host alumni and student events and corporate receptions.
While modern and sophisticated in its architectural style, the new building will complement and blend with the classical elements of the campus buildings that surround it. Exterior walls of brick and glass accented with limestone and metal complement Wohlers Hall immediately to the east. The forward-looking sustainable design elements and environmentally-friendly features of the building will set new standards for future campus architecture.
The instructional facility will provide a sense of place to current and future College of Business students and will become a new home for alumni. Made possible through generous gifts from alumni, corporate partners, and friends of the College, the new instructional facility will reflect the College's stature and symbolize its commitment to the future.
The first floor includes the commons area, student lounges, study areas, the corporate recruitment center, and multi-purpose interview rooms. The auditorium will be the scene of guest lectures, seminars, and conferences. Near-by reception areas encourage students and speakers to meet informally following events, lectures, and programs.
The Office of Undergraduate Affairs and Business Career Services -- both offices that work directly with students -- will be housed on the first floor. Accountancy majors will benefit from the new Accountancy Student Center that will house information resources and work space for students, prospective students, alumni, and corporate visitors.
The Market Information Laboratory is a place where learning comes to life as students are engaged in hands-on exercises that mimic a wide spectrum of real business situations.
The second and third floors will have attractive, state-of-the-art classrooms. Some are tiered for case-study style presentations and some are flat to better facilitate group projects and collaboration. All of the classrooms will be equipped with modern instructional technology.
The third floor will be the home of the Illinois MBA Program. Classrooms, student services, collaboration space, and lounges will enhance the educational experience for students in both the full-time and part-time, evening MBA programs. Suitable surroundings for consulting with clients and for meeting with mentors and potential employers will be provided.
The east wing that runs along Sixth Street has a fourth floor, which
will have several meeting spaces as well as faculty offices.
