Office for Futures and Options

There are more alumni from the University of Illinois working in the futures industry than from any other university in the country. It is not surprising, therefore, that two years ago an Office for Futures and Options Research (OFOR) was established that bridges the programs in the departments of finance and agricultural economics. Although the program is housed in the agricultural economics department, and directed by agricultural economist Raymond M. Leuthold, faculty and students from both departments participate in OFOR projects. Finance faculty associates include Joseph E. Finnerty, Virginia G. France, and Hun Park. Graduate students Lifan Wu and Inmoo Lee have received major grants from OFOR.

The Office for Futures and Options Research fosters scholarly research and education on futures and options markets. Since its creation two years ago, the office has instructed several hundred undergraduates in regularly scheduled classes, supported several graduate students on research projects, and hosted two conferences. The office also publishes working papers, hosts seminars and lectures, has sponsored a visiting scholar, established a mentor program for undergraduates, developed a computerized hedging simulator, and purchased research data. In general, the office facilitates research related to futures and options markets conducted by its eleven associated faculty and their students.

Although the office has only been operating a short while, it is internationally recognized for its research. The program regularly receives requests from outstanding faculty to be affiliated with OFOR as visiting scholars, but these appointments require funding. The continued growth and success of the program is, in part, dependent on continued private support, the kind of support that has helped establish this office which furthers the understanding of important issues in the futures and options market.

The OFOR welcomes inquires about its operation. If you would like additional information about its activities please contact the director, Ray Leuthold, at 305 Mumford Hall, 131 West Gregory Drive, Urbana, Illinois 61801. Phone (317)333-1815, Fax (217)333-5538.
