Commerce Awards Banquet

Taking time out to recognize the achievements of students and faculty, The Awards Banquet, one of the nicest occasions of the year.
As the term draws to an end on the Urbana campus, one activity that has become an annual event is the Commerce Awards Banquet. On April 30, 1995, in the Illini Union, award-winning students and faculty gathered before a large group of family, friends, colleagues, donors, and college administrators to be recognized for their outstanding achievements. Students who receive scholarships or awards, graduate students who receive fellowships or teaching recognition, and faculty who receive teaching awards or professional prizes were honored. In all, over 300 honors and awards are listed in the banquet program. There are too many awards to list them all here, but a few of the college-wide awards deserve special mention.

Lois Meerdink, director of Commerce Placement, received the Emerson Cammack Award for Outstanding Service to Undergraduate Students. This prestigious service award is given by the Commerce Alumni Association to a member of the college whose service to undergraduate students extends beyond the expected norm. Recipients for this college-wide award are nominated by students and faculty. The award is named for Emerson Cammack, former associate dean for undergraduate affairs.

Lois Meerdink has been director of the placement office for six years. During that time the office has grown, improved service, and been brought forward into the technological 20th century.

Student and recruiters alike praise Lois. The outstanding job she has done is reflected in the increased market share Commerce Placement has earned across campus. One nominator wrote, "Lois really cares about the students in the college. She is always looking for new programs to help students prepare themselves for the job market that she can add to her already overfull schedule. . . .For dedication and service far beyond the measure of her duties, Lois Meerdink is a very deserving candidate for the Emerson Cammack Outstanding Service Award."

Forest J. Jourden, assistant professor of business administration, was selected as the first winner of The George Weinstein Excellence Award. This new award was established by George Weinstein, chairman of Weinstein Associates Ltd., class of 1944 (management), to recognize the exceptional teacher who by dedication, mentoring, and concern makes a difference in the life of his students.

Two college-wide student leadership awards are presented each year by the Council of Presidents, an organization that represents all student organizations in the college and which sponsors the banquet.

Maurie Richie, president of the National Association of Black Accountants, won the President's Award given by the Council of Presidents. Maurie, a senior in accounting, has been a member of NABA for four years, two of them as president.

Jennifer A. Englehardt, a senior in accountancy won the Student Leadership Award. She is the external vice president for Phi Gamma Nu. Jennifer has served in that organization for four years.
