Associate Professor of Finance and Robert and Karen May Faculty Fellow
Dirk Hackbarth is a Associate Professor of Finance (with indefinite tenure) in the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2008. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of California at Berkeley in 2003 and served as an Assistant Professor of Finance at Indiana University (2003-2005) and at Washington University (2005-2008). He recently was a WU Gutmann Center Research Fellow at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and also held visiting professorships at the Bonn Graduate School of Economics, the London Business School, and the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration. At Illinois, he teaches courses in Corporate Finance and International Finance.
His research spans many areas of Corporate Finance, but his main focus is on capital structure, corporate investment, mergers and acquisitions, and real options. His papers have been presented at many internationally leading conferences, such as the annual meetings of the American, European, and Western Finance Associations, and published in a variety of academic journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Financial Intermediation, the Review of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and others. He currently serves as associate editor of e.g. Journal of Corporate Finance and Management Science, co-editor of Finance Research Letters, and guest editor of a special issue on “Corporate Theory” for the Journal of Corporate Finance.
In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, cycling, jogging, skiing, and spending time with his family.
