The purpose of the course is to familiarize students with the salient institutional features of public financial disclosure in market economies in general and the U.S. economy in particular. The interplay between regulatory bodies such as the Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC), the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) on the one hand and firms, accounting professionals, firms and professional bodies such as the American Institute of Certfied Public Accountants (AICPA) is highlighted by considering in depth selected accounting disclosure issues and the process by which existing disclosure rules and regulations were determined.

This course is part of Project Discovery which means that it demands/expects every student to be comfortable with:
a) active learning,
b) case discussions and active class participation, and,
c) developing proficiency in performing hands on professional research culminating in a series of presentations and reports made to the class.
