Four students from the College of Business came in a close second place finish on Saturday, February 20 at the USC Marshall School of Business International Case Competition 2010, losing out to the first place winners by a tiny margin.
Students, Shaistah Bahrainwala, Terence Yeo, Do Gyun (Brian) Kim and Tina Ho participated in the competition. Professor Kevin Fertig, lecturer of Business Strategy in the College, advised the group.
Hosted by the University of Southern California, the competition is currently one of the largest and most prestigious undergraduate case competitions of its type. Thirty top-ranked international and U.S. business schools are invited to participate each year. This year’s participants included 20 international teams and 10 national teams.
Among the top-ranking international institutions in the competition were Corvinus University of Budapest, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Copenhagen Business School, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, University College Dublin and the Singapore Management University.
The Walt Disney Company and the USC Marshall School of Business sponsored the competition, which took place on the University Park campus.
In the first round, ILLINOIS edged out the 4 other teams including University College Dublin, University of North Carolina, Maastricht University (Netherlands) and Singapore Management University to progress into the final stage.
For the final round of competition students had 24 hours to research, analyze, strategize and create a presentation for a panel of judges that included top executives from Disney and several other companies, as well as business-school professors.
“The most vital element of a 24-hour case competition is focus. We methodologically broke down the problem at hand and thought about creative solutions with comprehensive financial projections to support our recommendations,” said Terence, a senior in Finance and Technology & Management.
“We went into the competition hoping only to do our very best. This result is definitely beyond our expectation,” said Shaistah, a junior in Finance and Accounting.
“This event was not only a case competition, but also, a fantastic opportunity to meet future global leaders from all round the world,” said Do Gyun (Brian) Kim, a senior in Accounting and Finance.
“This competition challenged us to think abstractly, take creative risks, and utilize all the academic lessons we have learned from the College of Business. It was an extremely rewarding experience and truly a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Tina, a senior in Accounting.
