3M Supports Future Student Collaboration with Investment

12/19/2007

Thanks to a gift from 3M, a long-standing partner of the College of Business, the new Business Instructional Facility will have a respite for intellectual engagement known as the 3M Student Lounge. The space promises to be a popular student meeting place once the building opens in the fall of 2008.

Bruce Nixon (’89 alumnus), 3M Financial Manager, Track and Trace EBO, has been a key contact with BCS as well as an integral part in furthering the mutual relationship.

“A major factor in the decision to name the student lounge is the opportunity to get the company more in front of students and showcase the many umbrellas of 3M that may otherwise go unnoticed,” said Nixon.  “We are strong proponents of the collaboration of minds and believe the 3M Student Lounge will truly be a space where this can occur.”

The College of Business hosted a reception on October 8 where 3M Foundation Director, Barbara Kauffman and a team of 3M recruiters presented a check to the College for the $500,000 gift. 3M’s generosity is fueled by a strengthening relationship with the College.

“We are grateful for 3M’s past participation in various programs within the College of Business, and are extremely pleased to know and work closely with them,” said Acting Dean Greg Oldham.

Supply chain management is one of the areas important to 3M and the College. “The supply chain management program is an excellent program, said Susan Clifford, Corporate Lean Six Sigma Operations, 3M.  “We find that when recruiting College of Business students, they are well-trained and ready to hit the ground running.”

3M has participated in the Business Career Services (BCS) job shadow program for the past three years. They have also connected with students by performing mock interviews and contributing to corporate finance employer forums.

In his closing remarks during the reception, Oldham offered these remarks about Nixon and his past dealings with BCS:

“The Business Career Services team speaks highly of their interactions with Bruce, namely that, he always makes a point to visit with staff during career fairs and other events, is always willing to participate in many programs and events and has requested Illinois enrollment, hiring, and salary statistics several times over the past years for use in promoting Illinois to his superiors at 3M.  He has lots of Fighting Illini spirit!’
