Somaya Manuscript Recognized at 2011 Strategic Management Society Conference

11/14/2011

Seth Carnahan ’06, ’07 MAS and Business Administration Professor Deepak Somaya were recognized at the 2011 Strategic Management Society conference for their manuscript, “Competing Over Whom Your customers Hire: The Other Talent War.” Together they received two impressive awards, the Conference Best Paper Prize and the Ph.D. Best Paper Prize.

Carnahan and Somaya’s paper was chosen from several hundred submissions. Somaya explained that receiving the two awards was especially notable as they are rarely received at the same time. “Our paper was selected in both categories – which I understand has only happened once before, according to one of the prize co-chairs.”

The research on which Carnahan and Somaya’s research was based adds to the literature on the “so-called “war for talent” that has traditionally focused on competition between firms to attract and retain talented employees,” said Somaya. "Our paper builds on my prior research, which finds that employees can and often do leave for various reasons, and that retaining relationships with these “alumni” can be beneficial to firms – for example, when they go to work for customers. So, in this current paper, we study how competition between firms and their competitors in placing alumni with customers can affect the firm’s ability to get business from customers. We examine the conditions under which such employee mobility will have the biggest impact in this “other war for talent.”"

Congratulations go to both scholars for advancing the field and a job well done.
