Named the Most Influential Sports Figure in the state of Arizona for the 20th century and ranked 60th in BusinessWeek’s annual “The Power 100” ranking of the most powerful people in sports for 2008, Jerry Colangelo (’62) has been a force in sports for over 40 years. He was recently named chair of USA Basketball’s Board of Directors for the 2009-2012 term. Colangelo first became involved in USA Basketball when he was named Managing Director of the Men’s Senior National Team program in 2005. Under his winning leadership the USA squad would achieve several major distinctions and go on to win the gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Colangelo’s NBA career began with the Phoenix Suns franchise, where he was general manager, head coach, president, managing general partner, chief executive officer and remains as chairman. Colangelo and his wife Joan (’60) are both graduates of the University of Illinois. Read more:
