The D&T Foundation limits award of their fellowship to candidates who have completed at least 2 semesters of the Ph.D. program as of the application date. Fellowship is divided into 2 phases. Phase one pays $5,000 in two payments of $2,500 each, to support the candidate in his or her final 12 months of coursework and prelim exams. Phase 2 pays $15,000 in two $7,500 payments to support the Fellow during 12 months of dissertation work. In addition, selected award recipients can accept other Ph.D. program financial assistance of up to $10,000 from external sources  (outside the applicant's school) while receiving payment from D&T and must be a Ph.D. student for at least 2 more years when applying.
