GRADUATE MINOR IN FINANCE

Accountants with expertise in finance are increasingly highly valued by many employers. The graduate minor in Finance is designed to allow students in the MAS program to demonstrate substantive competency in the field of Finance. Counting the prerequisite requirement, the graduate minor is the equivalent of four graduate courses.

Finance Minor Application

Prerequisites for the minor:

Admission to the minor requires the completion of either Fin 221 and Fin 300, or Fin 520 as a prerequisite. All courses must have been taken for grades.

Requirements:

The Finance minor consists of:
Fin 511: Investments
Fin 512: Financial Derivatives
Fin 521: Advanced Corporate Finance

Substitutions are only permitted by approval of the Department of Finance.

Minor adviser:

Tim Flanagin, flanagin@illinois.edu, will act as academic adviser for students in the minor. Students who are having trouble with registration should contact either Tim Flanagin or your MAS adviser, in 1045 BIF, 217-333-5030

Advising notes:

The graduate minor should be completed within the Fall semester of the fifth year of the MAS program. The three graduate courses offered will not be available in Spring semesters. Students who drop any of the three courses in Fall will be treated as having dropped the minor.

Students should have already completed Fin 300 before enrolling in the graduate minor. If admission is sought before completion of the course, admission will be granted contingent on receiving a passing grade in the class. Fin 300 must be taken on this campus, since there are no equivalent courses available elsewhere.

Students who plan to take the graduate minor SHOULD NOT register for Fin 311, 321, or 412 as undergraduates. Students who have already taken any of these courses as undergraduates will not be able to pursue the Finance graduate minor.
