Process for Obtaining Academic Credit for an Accounting Internship

Step 1: Thoroughly read the Q&A regarding receiving academic credit for an accounting internship. Please pay close attention to the internship course pre-requisites (contained in the above Q&A); students who are not declared accounting majors or have not completed the required pre-requisites will be dropped from the course. If you have any questions please contact the internship program director.

Step 2: Make sure you have met with your accounting advisor and received approval of your program of study (i.e. including the internship credit). Every student's program of study is unique therefore you need to meet with an academic advisor to verify that it makes sense to take the internship for credit. Please understand that many students do NOT receive credit for their accounting internships.

Step 3: Attend the scheduled informational session with the faculty mentor to discuss the internship paper requirements. Only students who (1) are accounting majors (2) have an accounting related internship and (3) meet course pre-requisites should attend the session (course pre-requisites are detailed in the posted Q&A).

Please keep in mind that the meetings with the faculty mentor will not take place until near the end of the semester preceding your internship (i.e. April/May for summer internships and November/December for Spring internships). The internship director will contact you with the date, time and location for the informational sessions.

Step 4: You have attended the informational session and you have decided that you want credit for your internship. Email the internship director with (1) your full name and (2) the amount of credit you would like. Upon verification of your pre-requisites the department will authorize you to register for the internship course. Once you have been authorized by the department you will be able to register online using your enterprise ID and password. If you have questions regarding the on-line registration system please contact your academic advisor.

Important reminders:
TUITION CHARGES: Remember you will be charged tuition the same as any other course taken at the University (even zero credit enrollment has a tuition charge). Please see the Q&A for a more detailed discussion of tuition charges and the assessment of campus fees.

DROPPING THE COURSE: If you decide to drop the course, you need to keep the University drop dates in mind to avoid paying tuition. The drop deadline for the internship course is no different than the policy for any other course at the University (and would apply to students registered for "zero credit" as well). Information about drop dates can be found at: www.oar.uiuc.edu/current
